Working on the old Fergie in between other jobs, slowly chipping away at the restoration of what was left after removing it from the beet harvester. The steering box is like brand new, never been used, the fuel tank was well preserved being full of old diesel, the radiator still full of antifreeze rich water. Sourcing bits to rebuild it was taking some time over evenings trawling the web and the ‘bay of E’! Some old parts and some new. One of which was a second hand bonnet all the way from Aberdeen! Since the C10 has been ‘allocated’ a Cummins 6BT as it’s powerplant and the fact that the original dash was a bit beaten up and had been butchered in the past the choice was made to make one that was useful for the new powerplant and had everything else needed to control the various pieces of equipment on the truck. Using the very best ‘Cardboard Aided design’ a template was made and refined until I could make a proper CAD file and have the blank cut from steel. The Cummins 6BT when in trucks such as the Leyland DAF 45 were coupled to an S5-42 gearbox. Standard stuff, but to put this gearbox in a truck that requires the gearstick to come through the transmisson tunnel is a no no as the selector unit is side mounted and for forward control. So the solution, find a top loader gearstick, but these are like rocking horse 💩. Options are either find one in America as they were used on Ford broncos and the suchlike, but getting one shipped is a nightmare. UK based suppliers had dried up, but step in Baruch Sekenofsky who I befriended on a forum for Cummins engine swaps. He had made the adaptors before and made me a robust unit that uses a mix of OEM parts from the side loader selector, gearstick from another manufacturer, but all works perfectly and nice short throw on the selector once fitted.
